Forever Fire

Written by Jason R. Wydro

Every album has to answer one question by its final track: what was all of this for?

This is my answer. The last song on Floregon isn't about where I've been — the flatland roads, the mirrors, the roots. It's about what kind of person all those miles were building. And it opens in the one place nobody wants to stand:

I stand where no one wants to stand / With smoke in my eyes and ash in my hands

When the door blows open, the whole world backs away from the street. That's the natural direction — away from the heat, away from the wreckage, away from whatever's burning. And this song is about the strange, stubborn why that pulls some people's feet the other way. Toward it. Where the sparks climb high.

The world has names for those people. Foolish. Soft. Undone. Reckless. Blind. The song doesn't argue with a single one of those names. It just asks the question that makes them irrelevant:

If no one steps in / If no one takes hold / The future gets buried / Under smoke and cold

Somebody's got to cross that line. Not for applause. Not for a name. That's the entire ethic of the chorus — and notice what it deliberately refuses to claim. Not because I'm fearless. Because someone has to step in. Courage in this song isn't the absence of fear. It's the presence of a reason bigger than it.

The second verse takes on the voices that mock that reason. They laughed in my face. Said I keep losing in a dead-end race. Scammers shouting from the side of the road, selling fear like a bargain deal, insisting money is all that's real. And the verse answers with the truest line about why anyone runs toward wreckage:

But there's a different payment / A deeper exchange / When you stand in the wreckage / And help something change

There's a currency the sideline can't count. Anyone who's ever actually helped somebody knows exactly what it pays.

The bridge quietly redefines the whole idea of heroism — and it's the heart of the song:

Maybe saving the day / Isn't thunder or gold / Maybe it's one steady hand / When the night turns cold

Maybe heroes get mocked before anything's won. Maybe fools are the ones who still choose to run. And maybe the fire only looks endless because everyone's waiting for someone else to be first. The fire looks endless until someone steps in.

Then the album does something it hasn't done in seven tracks. It stops talking about me — and turns to you:

That's all this story / No more to say / It's you and me / Who can save the day

That's how Floregon ends. Not with a landscape. With an invitation. Every road on this record — the flat ones, the circling ones, the forward-only ones — was leading to this handoff.

One step forward. One hand raised.
Not thunder. Not gold. One steady hand.
Call it foolish. Run anyway.

Someone has to step in.

It might as well be us.

Gave a great talk on how Google categorizes web pages and sites to determine whether or not you will be on the front page, and how blogs help with that.
